How to Get Your Squarespace Website on Google (in 5 Simple Steps)

Hey, friend! 👋
Your new website is ready (yay!) — now it’s time to make sure it shows up where it really matters: Google. Because as beautiful as your site is, it won’t help your business grow unless people can find it.

This step-by-step guide will walk you through how to get your website indexed by Google so it can start showing up in search results. It’s not as techy as it sounds — promise!

🧭 STEP 1: Connect Your Website to Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool that shows you how your site is performing in search results. This is the first thing to do once your site is live.

Here’s how to connect it:

  1. Go to your Squarespace Home Menu > Settings > Connected Accounts

  2. Click Connect Account

  3. Choose Google Search Console

  4. Log in with your Gmail account and follow the prompts

That’s it! Once connected, Google will start collecting data about your site’s search performance — what keywords people are using, which pages are showing up, and more.

🧭 STEP 2: Submit Your Sitemap to Google

Your sitemap is like a map of your website — it tells Google what pages exist and makes it easier for them to crawl and index your content.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. In your browser, go to:
    https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
(Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain — like alisonstratedesign.com/sitemap.xml)

  2. Copy that link.

  3. Log into Google Search Console

  4. Click on your site > Choose Sitemaps from the left menu

  5. Paste sitemap.xml into the field (it’ll auto-attach your domain)

  6. Click Submit

📌 It may take a day or two for Google to process your sitemap and start indexing pages — totally normal.

🧭 STEP 3: Do a Quick SEO Checkup (Technical Stuff)

Before Google can rank your site, it needs to understand it. Let’s make sure there are no hidden issues.

Here’s what to check:

Mobile-friendly: Your site is likely already mobile-optimized (yay, Squarespace!), but test it here just in case.
No broken links: Click around your site — make sure all links work and don’t lead to error pages.
Page speed: Run your site through PageSpeed Insights to see if any pages are slow to load.
Everything is published: In your Squarespace editor, double-check that all your important pages are live and visible (not password protected or private).

🧭 STEP 4: Add Quality Content to Your Site

Google loves content that helps people. The more helpful, clear, and original your content is, the more likely it is to rank.

Content Tips:

  • Use headings (like this!) to organize pages

  • Write at least 300 words per page (more is better!)

  • Include keywords your audience might search (like “family photographer in Austin”)

  • Make sure every page answers a question, solves a problem, or offers value

💡 Blog posts are an amazing way to keep your content fresh and Google-friendly!

🧭 STEP 5: Fill Out Your SEO Settings in Squarespace

Squarespace gives you tools to help Google understand your pages. Let’s use them!

Here’s what to do:

  1. In your Squarespace Home Menu, go to Pages

  2. Hover over a page and click the gear icon ⚙️

  3. Click the SEO tab

  4. Add a clear SEO Title (what should show in Google search)

  5. Add a simple SEO Description (1–2 sentences about the page)

🔁 Repeat for every main page on your site!

Pro tip: Keep your titles short, clear, and include relevant keywords. Your description should encourage someone to click.

✅ That’s it — you’re on Google’s radar now!

These steps help Google find, understand, and index your site — which is the first step to ranking and getting traffic.

SEO is a long game, so don’t stress if you don’t see results overnight. Just keep your site updated, publish new content when you can, and check in with your Google Search Console data every now and then.

Alison Strate

Here is a little bit about me. I am a millennial, married, and young mother of three beautiful children. I live in Southern Utah and love the outdoors. I have a B.S. in Horticulture (the study of plants) and a minor in marketing. I like to think that my degree in horticulture really paved the way for me as a designer. I love color and using it to capture an audience.

My journey into the world of web design began back in 2014, when I designed a website for the company I was working for as their marketing manager. I fell in love with Squarespace and since my husband and I were starting a family I realized designing websites was something I could do from home. Ever since then I have been building websites on the Squarespace platform. I have loved how it has evolved and consider myself an expert in Squarespace.

My design approach is a blend of nature's beauty and strategic thinking. It's been an incredible journey from the serene world of plants to the dynamic realm of digital design, and I've found joy in blending these seemingly disparate fields. From cozy local businesses to vast solar farms in the Australian countryside, my portfolio reflects the diversity of projects I've had the pleasure of working on over the years. I believe in crafting websites that not only look good but also feel like a true reflection of the businesses they represent.

If you're in search of a seasoned designer who combines creativity, dedication, and empathy, look no further. I'm here to collaborate with you on your digital projects, ensuring they not only meet but exceed your expectations. Let's work together to create captivating digital experiences that resonate with your audience and achieve your business goals.
